All warm air
furnaces contain a heat exchanger which separates the combustible gases from the warm
air circulating through your home. The above photo indicates a
large crack in the furnace heat exchanger.
There are
various methods of testing heat exchangers but often cracks
can be seen with a special camera used for such purpose.
The only
answer when finding a cracked heat exchanger is generally
the replacement of the entire furnace.
Undetected
cracks can lead to carbon monoxide poisoning.

What Do Trees & Plumbing
Have In Common?
PIPES
As trees and plants mature, their underground root
system grows out further from the base seeking a steady source of
moisture. In the fall and winter months this is more
apparent. In doing so, roots often find cracks in
your underground sewer main pipes connected between your home
and the city sewer or your septic system.
These small feeder roots and root hairs infiltrate
your pipes and over time will grow larger, thus blocking the
pipe and even causing greater pipe damage.
By using a drain machine with cutting blades, you
can remove the roots, however this is usually a temporary fix
lasting less than a year.
Root control formulas are useful as a
preventative measure and for general maintenance of
your drain, waste and sewer systems. Using these formulas
alone once the damage is done can reduce root growth but will leave
the resultant damage they created.
If you have root infiltration, the best remedy is to
use a special camera to determine the source of the problem
and the best solution to repairing the pipe. This can be
the most expensive option in the short term, however you
will fix the problem rather than simply addressing the
symptom. Once the pipe is fixed, you can use the root
controller as a maintenance to keep your pipes flowing.
